Darrell Arnold - Publisher
This is who we are and what our magazine represents. COWBOY MAGAZINE Publisher Darrell Arnold started the publication in 1990, after a 5-year stint as Associate Editor at WESTERN HORSEMAN and a 1-year position as Feature Writer for the TEXAS LONGHORN JOURNAL. Arnold realized that there was no publication that was dedicated to telling the story of the authentic working cowboy, so he decided to start his own publication. That is how COWBOY MAGAZINE was born.
"I was never a working cowboy," says Arnold, "except for a taste of it during my high school days, when I helped area ranchers on weekends and during the summers, near my hometown of La Veta, Colorado.
"But I saw enough of the lifestyle to know that these were exceptional men, performing a highly specialized and sometimes dangerous job for very little monetary return. Their reward comes from working on the land, with horses and cattle, and knowing they were part of an elite fraternity of men."
The American cowboy is the greatest hero the world has ever known, thanks to the influence of the Hollywood western. It is the mission of COWBOY MAGAZINE to tell the world about the cowboy, not the movie cowboy who is largely a mythological figure, but the working cowboy the man on horseback who works cattle on the western ranches.
Since COWBOY MAGAZINE blazed the trail, a number of publishers have started similar magazines, but they are weak imitations. Real working cowboys know a phony when they see one, and they know COWBOY MAGAZINE is the only magazine that accurately portrays their lifestyle.
Says Arnold, "I promise to continue to tell the story of the real cowboy. He is unique in the world, and deserves to have a magazine dedicated to his way of life."
