Good Medicine:

Humorous Stories & Poems
from COWBOY MAGAZINE

edited by Darrell Arnold                      foreword by Baxter Black

I have been publishing COWBOY MAGAZINE for 15 years. It has always been my intention that the stories and articles in each magazine convey to our readers the essence of cowboy and ranching life. With somewhere between 12 and 20 stories per issue, we have managed to publish several hundred stories so far, and will continue to do so as long as there is enough demand to support the magazine.

It recently occurred to me that I might be able to publish a series of books, each containing the best of the stories and articles from COWBOY MAGAZINE. Each book could contain a certain kind of story, like funny stories, heroic stories, animal-tribute stories, historic stories, or contemporary working cowboy adventures.

Though I'm a serious student of cowboy history, and though I am deeply moved and inspired by the tales of trial and triumph that many of our cowboy and ranching friends have written for the magazine, I must confess that I am partial to the humorous stories. Thus, I have started the book series with this collection of humor from cowboy magazine.

Ranching is a rewarding but difficult life, and one of the ways ranching people cope is to cultivate a rich sense of humor about their lives and about their work. It is this ability to laugh at one's own lifestyle that makes it more bearable and pleasant. The old saw about "laughter being good for the soul," is true, and that is why this book is titled, Good Medicine: Humorous stories and poems from Cowboy Magazine.

I like to laugh, and I hope you do too. So pour yourself a beverage, settle down in a comfortable place, and sit back and enjoy these funny tales and adventures written by talented and observant people who know and understand the lighter side of ranching life.
