The Cowboy And The Vet

poem and illustration by Bill Lowman

Found on page 7 in the Spring 2006 issue.

Calvin' time was in full routine
For spring had rolled around
That night as he done his regular check
To his dismay he found

A heifer was in need of help
But the calf was still alive yet
He dashed for the house to grab the phone
And secure a date with the vet

He hit the trailer square on the hitch
With only the second try
And backed up to the loadin' alley
After gas'n up on the fly

Things were runnin' through his mind
As he stepped out in the night
His wallet was still on the counter
Where he'd laid it out of sight

This meant another trip to the house
Disgusted with his absent mind
He floored the pickup up the road
Lost time he searched to find

Gravel flew from tops of curves
On that 50-mile run
The heifer sure was ridin' good
As he continued to give her the gun

Tankers from the oil patch
Were forced over to the side
As his half came out of the middle
Cops couldn't have stopped him if they tried

He rolled up to the clinic
At the outskirts on through town
As he hustled to the trailer gate
There came an embarrassed frown

He poked his head inside Doc's office
Expectin' to understand, somehow,
Said, "Just sit tight a couple more hours.
I've gotta go home and load the cow."
